Professional Comic Book Artists: How fast are you?

Journal Entry: Thu May 28, 2009, 2:43 PM
Hey Guys and Girls!!

I know this question has been asked a bunch of times around the comics community, but an event happened recently...along with my personal curiosity...that has me asking it again. How long, on average, does it take you to complete a sequential page? Also, what's the most completed pages you've ever done in the shortest amount of time. This goes out to everyone, but mostly my peers who are working at least semi-steadily on books.

The event that prompted this was when Mark Brooks :icondiablo2003: recently posted on his Facebook that he had just completed a staggering 11 pages in 4 days! I know some of you knowledgeable comics scholars know of the stories of Kirby and many other golden age creators doing entire issues in a weekend. But what of the modern day artists? The demands of our industry say that we should all be cranking out beautifully detailed pages at a rate of 2.5 a day...average?!?! WOW! I'm trying to get there, but it's as hard as trigonometry for me due to my current schedule to just get one detailed page completed a day let alone 2. I have too many breaks away from the table to really get a decent groove going. It's like I start from scratch every time I sit back down. Anyway, enough about my issues...LOL

So, I'll start. Also, some people are responsible for multiple art chores which can add time to the process. So, please specify so that all of us can get a better picture of you speed and skill set.

Average: 1 pg. per day - Just Pencils
Most: 7 pgs. in 3 days. - Just Pencils

wow two and a half pages a day... his hands must have been sore when that was over.

I can ink sequential page with nothing too fancy in it in one day good days of work. Certain things really slow med down... stuff like cityscapes and other things that i have to use the ruler puts on alot of extra time.

Average: 1 page per month - Just traditional pencils
Most: 2 pages per day - Just Digital pencils

Ack. Everything else takes me a week just to finish (if I'm lucky enough to not lose interest in it). Though I'm no professional, but I suck. If I could change this overnight, I would, but it is a problem...

as an inker- this is how it went-average 1 1/2 pages a day' maybe 6 a week- but it depended on the page and the penciller- ron lim i could do 2 1/2 a day and 12 a week ( when i was firing on all cylinders), but bryan hitch i was lucky to do 1 a day, 5 a week- on my best day i once did 6 pages in a 20 hour haul---i miss those days:(

......yeah, well, i'd rather have a gun and not need it, than need a gun and not have it......

I comfortably spend about five days flatting a book like the new New Mutants series. And the Dark Reign Fantastic Four book. I did Hellcat books in a few days.

I've really pushed myself and done eleven pages in one go, but that's almost 24 hours of work, so it's not at all healthy.

INk-wise, I can do between 1-3 pages per day, absolutely depending on the amount of stuff on the page and the penciller.

Jose Delbo, one of my teachers at the Kubert School, stated that he did 80 pages a month, pencils and inks, in Argentina as a youth (I think it was Argentina, memory's a bit fuzzy there)...

i can average 2 pages a day easily, and just because i work cartoony doesn't mean it's faster or easier. ;)

the most i have done, was 22 pages pencilled, inked, and colored, in just under 4 weeks. it was about 24 days or so, i think. i had to do that for the last issue of Xombie, originally, it was suppossed to be a 6 issue mini, but they decided to knocked it down to 5, with 5 being double sized, so they needed it sooner. i got very little sleep that month.

80 pages!?! Sheesh! Mark, it's stories like that that make me want to cry. LOL.
:iconraheight:
You and Jeremy are amazing in that way. You can crank out some really nice stuff in the time it would take most folks to do half of that. How many ditractions did you have during those 24 days?
:iconraede:
well, i had the usual stuff, video games taunting me, etc, but i've gotten very good at resisting the temptation. but the biggest thing i had was my son was only about 3-4 months old at the time. and my wife had gone back to work, luckily her job is split shift, before and after school, so i'd get work done while she was home during the day, then when she got home that evening, i'd get back to work, usually until 2-3am sometimes later, and then get back up 7-8am, and start all over.

I only color, but I usually do 3-5 pages a day. That usually leaves me with enough free time to keep from feel like I'm working my life away. The fastest I've ever done was 22 pages in 2.5 days.
